Trying a Menstrual Cup for the First Time – My Experience with the Beppy Cup
I'll admit it: even as someone who talks about periods for a living and is endlessly curious about all things cycle-related, I had never tried a menstrual cup before. Not once.
So when the team at Beppy gifted me their Beppy Cup and Steamer + Sterilizer, I was both excited and - surprisingly - hesitant. I kept it in the box for a while, circling around it like a cat with a new toy. Colourful. Intriguing. Slightly intimidating. Every time my period approached, I’d tell myself; “Maybe next cycle.”
Why the delay?
I think it was partly the timing. During my luteal phase (the days before bleeding), I'm feeling slightly more sensitive and less inclined to try new things. So although I had good intentions, my nervous system wasn't quite on board. If you track your cycle, you'll know what I mean: trying something totally new at a time when your body is craving familiarity and comfort can feel like a bit much.
But last month, I decided to change the script. I gave myself space to explore the Beppy Cup with curiosity rather than pressure. I reminded myself: this doesn’t have to be perfect. I’m learning. I’m allowed to be unsure.
My first try
I approached it with a “new, shiny thing” mindset; like unboxing a gadget or trying out a recipe from a cuisine I hadn’t cooked before. And honestly? It went better than expected.
The cup itself is gorgeous - yes, gorgeous! The colour, the softness of the material and the little details made it feel like a product designed with love. The instructions were clear and kind, not clinical. Even the way the packaging was presented felt fun and welcoming. This matters more than we give it credit for, especially for something so personal.
Yes, I still worried about leaking.. and yes, I kept checking it way more than needed. But the Beppy Cup worked. It actually worked. I was pleasantly surprised by how it stayed in place, how it felt (or rather didn’t feel!) and how easy it was to insert and remove once I got the hang of it.
A whole new vibe
The second time around, something had shifted. Using the cup felt less like a “thing.” I felt more confident in my body. I trusted the product. By cycle three, the learning curve had levelled out and I could actually start to enjoy the benefits: less waste, more freedom and a sense of connection to my own cycle.
It helped that I also had the Beppy Steamer + Sterilizer, which made cleaning effortless. Knowing my cup was hygienic and fresh made a big difference, especially when I was already balancing busy days and a full plate (metaphorically and hormonally).
Some reflections
Looking back, I can really see how my cycle phases influenced my willingness to try the cup but I wonder why I was hesitant to begin with. If I had known what I know now, I would have definitely tried it early. I am so happy that I gave it a go and that it worked out! Maybe not flawlessly. But truthfully. Humanly. Which is kind of the point.
Final thoughts
The Beppy Cup and Steamer package turned out to be a colourful, clever and comforting addition to my cycle care kit. It gave me a new level of agency in how I experience my period. It helped me notice how timing matters, how trust builds and how trying something new can open doors to connection - not just with a product, but with myself.
If you’ve been curious about menstrual cups but have felt a bit of hesitation, know that you’re not alone. Start when you’re ready. Approach it with curiosity. Give it time. And if you can, choose a product like Beppy that makes the experience feel less clinical and more… you.
Because your period care should feel like it belongs to you.
